A holistic approach: Health beyond the clinical

Traditionally, we have thought of health as a purely biological matter. However, we now know that it is a complex social issue. From molecular factors to socio-economic conditions, everything influences our quality of life.

At the Canary Islands Dental Foundation (Fundocan), our approach stems from this reality: to transform dental health, we must understand the forces that shape our society.

Why are we talking about health inequalities?

Not everyone has the same opportunities to be healthy. Health inequalities are those preventable disparities that depend on where we live and work.

These conditions determine:

  • The risk of developing illnesses.

  • Access to effective preventive measures.

  • The quality of the treatment received.

Our methodological framework aims to address these gaps, ensuring that your postcode does not determine the health of your smile.

Global Health: Ethics and Public Engagement

Global health is not some abstract concept. It is a daily practice that we at Fundocan base on:

  1. Equity and Ethics: We prioritise the most vulnerable groups.

  2. Human Rights: Health is a right, not a privilege.

  3. Local Action with a Global Perspective: We tackle shared challenges with solutions tailored to the realities of life on the islands.

  4. Interdisciplinarity: We work with economic, political and social stakeholders to bring about measurable change.

The home as a driving force for well-being

Family and community are the cornerstones of good health. It is at home that the habits which will stay with us for life are formed. Their importance lies in:

  • Primary socialisation: Where we learn to look after ourselves.

  • Passing on culture and values: The foundation of a healthy life.

  • Mutual support: The well-being of each member depends on the functioning of the family unit.

Our Mission

This entire theoretical framework underpins Fundocan’s work. We are not just a dental service; we are a social initiative that seeks to take concrete action to improve the lives of the people of the Canary Islands.
